Sideways (Alexander Payne, 2004) is about two friends, Miles and Jack. Even though the film is about two friends, the story is told from Miles’ point of view. Miles is an English teacher and has been trying to start a career as a writer for years. He is depressed because of his marriage that ended in divorce. Jack, on the other hand, is about to get married but wants to score with other women before that. The two men, who are clearly in a midlife crisis, travel together through the vineyards of California, where they do all kinds of different wine tastings. The film is spoken in English and has Dutch subtitles.
In addition to the various dishes, drinks, and especially wine, play the biggest role in this film. During Miles and Jack’s tour of the vineyards, they taste many types of wines. From champagne to rosé and from sauvignon blanc to merlot, it all passes by!
What you see, is what you eat. At exactly the same time, you eat what is also eaten in the film. The culinary script of Cinema Culinair is leading for the chef and the service. Good film + good food + great timing. The punch line is in the latter. An example. When the scrambled eggs and tuna salad are eaten at minute 14 and 55 seconds in the film, we want our guests to be able to taste this dish at the same time. A minute earlier or later makes the difference between good and fan-tas-tic! Ultimately, it is about not only seeing or hearing that film, but also tasting and feeling it.
1
Come on time and get a taste of the atmosphere. No cinema, no restaurant, but an urban or classic ballroom with high ceilings, movie screens and long tables. But first: buy a bottle of wine to accompany the film. Or something else delicious.
2
At the table, you’ll be told how it works. Seven carefully prepared dishes are served, perfectly timed with the film. There is a break halfway the movie. As soon as the movie starts, the first dishes appear in front of you, quickly and efficiently. Then it’s time to countdown…. 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 and taste. Together all at once.
3
You eat exactly the same as the actors in the movie. Right down to the second. So you experience the film with all your senses: see, hear, smell, taste and feel. It couldn’t be more intense. see, hear, smell, taste and feel. As if you were sitting at the table with the actors.
These are the dishes from the movies that you eat on the second flush with the movie.
Chocolate and vanilla cake
Toasted bread with scrambled eggs, tomato and lamb's lettuce
”When are we drinking..? Now!”
”I am NOT drinking any f*cking Merlot!”
Cheese with fig bread, grapes and olives
Spareribs with potato salad cornbread
Vegan: Smoked eggplant with BBQ sauce
It is not possible to take allergens into account. If you can’t have something, skip this dish. Also consider the all-vegetarian menu. There are two choices: all dishes as in the movie. Or: fully vegetarian. Changing a dish is not possible.

Some films you don’t just want to see, you want to taste them! This is one of those films. When you see the main characters enjoying all the delicious food in the film, you want to taste it too. And that is possible, with Cinema Culinair. Sometimes a dish is shown for a relatively short time, but very often you see the preparation, the moment in the mouth and the aftertaste. That is truly ultimate. We want you to experience this film like never before. So: smell, taste and feel what you see on the screen. As if you are there, on the film set. It doesn’t get more intense than that.

Very fun and delicious experience. At the same time with the main character himself live tasting what is eaten in the movie, who wouldn't want that? With your date, with friends, as a family outing - this is a top experience! Be quick though because tickets always sell out quickly.

Rutger and his team have developed this concept into a beautiful experience! The romantic idea is correct. Long tables, good atmosphere, good conversations and good food. It's amazing how good quality food it is to serve so many people at the same time. And let's face it, eat what you see is brilliant...

Myra, 2024Perfect concept for a night out.
Perfect concept for an evening out. The food is also excellent for vegetarians. Partly because of the friendly service, the small scale and beautiful location (Tolhuis Amsterdam), there is a pleasant atmosphere.

Movie with dinner
With Le pot-au-feu (2023, Trần Anh Hùn, the film is also known by its title The taste of things), it is simply impossible not to feel like eating. Every scene exudes the love and craftsmanship for French classic cuisine, and the film is romance and cooking course in one. We are in Dodin's imposing mansion where he and his cook Eugénie (Juliette Binoche) prepare the most delicious dishes for friends. In the traditional kitchen without electricity and gas, turbot, vol-au-vent, pigeons and veal backs are silently prepared, all filmed like living paintings that make you long for a sweltering French summer in the country.
