Good food

This film is all about food! This evening, we will be serving you a mix of Cuban and American dishes: varied and delicious. Expect delicious comfort food, made with love, just like in the film. And you can taste it! Chef Roy Choi from Los Angeles, the culinary coach for this film, created all the dishes in the film to perfection. Thanks to our own chef Anja, you can enjoy them here during the film.

Good film

Chef (Favreau, 2014) is a culinary comedy about top chef Carl Casper, who lives for his work. When he is slammed by a restaurant critic, he vents his frustration on Twitter. He doesn’t realize that everyone can read his response, which leads to a media frenzy.

His ex-wife suggests he buy a food truck and return to basics: honest, delicious food that makes people happy. With his young son and a former colleague, he travels through the southern states of America and rediscovers his love of cooking.

The film is English spoken and Dutch subtitled.

Great timing

What you see, is what you eat. At exactly the same time, you eat whatever is eaten in the film. Cinema Culinair’s culinary script guides the cook and the service.

Good film + good food + great timing. The clue is in the last part. An example. When Chef Carl Casper eats his homemade Cubano at 1 hour, 14 minutes, and 53 seconds into the film, we want our guests to be able to taste this dish at the same time. A minute earlier or later makes the difference between good and fantastic! Ultimately, it’s not just about seeing or hearing the film, but also tasting and feeling it.

How does it work?

1

Welcome and order your drinks

Arrive on time and soak up the atmosphere. Not a cinema, not a restaurant, but an urban or classic ballroom with high ceilings, film screens, and long tables. First: buy a bottle of wine to enjoy with the film. Or something else delicious.

2

Order your own drink at the bar and enjoy!

At the table, you’ll be told how it works. Seven carefully prepared dishes are served, perfectly timed with the film. There is a break halfway the movie. As soon as the movie starts, the first dishes appear in front of you, quickly and efficiently. Then it’s time to countdown…. 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 and taste. Together all at once.

3

Dining with the actors from the film

You eat exactly the same food as the actors in the movie. Down to the second. This allows you to experience the movie with all your senses. It doesn’t get any more immersive than this. See, hear, smell, taste, and feel. It’s as if you were sitting at the table with the actors.

A Culinary Journey: An Evening with the Chef
Chef isn’t just another movie that happens to feature food. Director Jon Favreau wants to evoke a certain feeling in you. He takes you on a journey where food amplifies the story’s emotions. The film feels like a culinary and sensory experience: warm, cheerful, and comforting. You relax, smile, and feel connected. It’s like taking a bite out of a sweet cupcake.

But in terms of atmosphere, the film is It’s not all sweetness and light. At first, there’s a hint of bitterness to the story: frustration, failure, and a hunger for recognition. Halfway through, the mood shifts. Then comes energy, freedom, and strength. Street food practically jumps off the screen: hot, greasy, spicy, and vibrant. You can feel the energy and the joy.

In the end, a sweet-umami sensation lingers: round, comforting, and familiar. A sense of deep satisfaction and connection. That is the aftertaste left by watching and savoring the film *Chef*.

Step by step Cubano

For a ham and cheese sandwich, the Cubano is creating more of a furor than you might expect. In the 19th century, Cubans could easily travel to Florida, and they brought their favorite sandwich with them. Tradition has it that the sandwich only became what it is today in Miami/Key West. There is a regional […]
