Food plays a big role in this film and the dishes are of an Italian-American classic nature. The culinary highlight of the film is the timpano, a dish that became famous through this film. Actor and director Stanley Tucci is an avid amateur chef, and made a personal film with this film.
Big Night (Stanley Tucci & Campbell Scott, 1996) is about two brothers who open an Italian restaurant in New Jersey but struggle to keep the place running. The manager Secondo sees only one way left to acquire customers. He ‘arranges’ a high-ranking guest to come and dine at The Paradise: Louis Prima, a celebrated Italian jazz musician. The brothers face their biggest challenge ever: jointly preparing a sublime meal for their guest of honour and a host of customers. But on the Big Night, Louis Prima’s arrival fails to materialise. Meanwhile, the customers get increasingly drunk and the two brothers approach their boiling point… ‘In love and life, one big night can change everything.’ The film is English spoken and subtitled in Dutch.
What you see, is what you eat. At exactly the same time, you eat whatever is eaten in the film. Cinema Culinair’s culinary script guides the cook and the service. Good film + good food + great timing. The punchline is in the latter. An example. If the chicken cacciatore is served in minute 18, we want our guests to taste this dish simultaneously. A minute earlier or later determines the difference between good and fan-tas-tastic! In the end, it’s all about not just seeing or hearing that film, but also tasting and feeling it.
