For a ham and cheese sandwich, the Cubano is creating more of a furor than you might expect. In the 19th century, Cubans could easily travel to Florida, and they brought their favorite sandwich with them. Tradition has it that the sandwich only became what it is today in Miami/Key West. There is a regional difference between Tampa (with salami) and Miami (without salami), and of course we do it as in the movie, and that is the Miami version. In the movie it’s also called a Medianoche or Midnight Sandwich, which is a smaller version of the Cubano.
